The Current Situation The vast majority of Gigabit Ethernet-class switching chips shipped today use the GMII interface technology to link the MAC and PHY components. This is a parallel format, which uses 25 separate traces running simultaneously at 125 MHz between every MAC and PHY pair. In existing applications, the GMII technology has proven adequate to this task, but in upcoming designs it's too cumbersome.

Also becoming available are routers that analyze and correct for signal integrity problems as they route. As noise immunity is dominated mostly by interconnect effects, this is a logical place in the design flow to focus on signal integrity prevention.

Security While POTS is considered an extremely secure service, cable-basedIP telephony is not. Much like cellular telephony, cable-basedconversations are susceptible to illegal wire tapping andinadvertent chat” conditions. To address this untenable situation,DOCSIS and NCS support multiple security services.

Indeed, when we start to think about it, our requirements for identifying both goods and individuals are incredibly far reaching. They also go back a long way. The ancient Egyptians effectively used biometric techniques in order to identify individuals. Noteworthy goods and artifacts of all persuasions have been hall-marked in one way or another, ever since mankind was first capable of producing them. The concept of identifying manufactured entities and possessions, animals and human beings and even territory is not new. What has changed in recent times is the available technology with which to do so.
