A ground-referenced headphone amplifier is usually an incremental increase in the cost of the IC and about twice the power consumption when compared to an OCL headphone amplifier. A ground-referenced headphone amplifier has excellent bass response. Because a ground-referenced headphone amplifier effective doubles its supply voltages, it can be used with voltages as low 1.4V and yet still create adequate output power (see sidebar How Much Power is Needed? ). A ground-referenced headphone amplifier is typically used in systems with very stringent size requirements and where the headphone jack may be connected to other equipment.

As a rule it is simply necessary to take the decoupling ground separately back to the ground star point, as shown in Figure 6. Note that the star point A is defined on a short spur from the heavy connection joining the reservoirs; trying to use B as the star point will introduce ripple due to the large reservoir charging current pulses passing through it.

None of the codecs in Table 1 satisfy all the desired characteristics of surveillance systems: low latency, high compression efficiency, resolution and frame rate flexibility, low complexity, and low cost. H.264 Baseline Profile probably offers the best compromise, but lacks the inherent scalability needed in surveillance applications.
