Converter DevicesAfter passing through the radio chain, the next step is the converter device. The time between analog sampling and digital conversion needs to be considered. This is carried out by the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for the receive path, and by the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) for the transmit path. In both cases, the delay between the analog sample and its digital representation is associated with a number of factors, including any on board DSP (interpolation, channelization, filtering, up or down conversion), and the digital transmission mechanism (parallel LVDS, or serial JESD204 links). As the complexity of these converters increases, the latency associated with them does as well. The key parameters when selecting the converters for low latency radios is to minimize the use of DSP where possible, and generally looking towards high sampling rates and the smallest digital buffers possible.
