The current needed to program an XPM memory block is low–in the 100A range for each programming event–and a 1-Mbit memory can be programmed in just a few seconds. The memory can be programmed with an external programming voltage supply or an on-chip charge pump. XPM is also dense, at 1 ½ transistors per bit, and inherently secure. Since programming of a bit is within the breakdown region of the gate oxide, it is embedded deep underneath many fabrication layers of a CMOS chip. Bit programming does not depend on voltage or charge storage, so it cannot be read by voltage-contrast scanning or other reverse engineering techniques and is, hence, very secure.
