GateField developed the flash-based FPGA architecture used in Actel's ProASIC product line. Actel had an equity stake in GateField and purchased the rest of the company last month (see May 11 story). GateField now is adapting its technology to produce a flash-based FPGA core, which Actel wants because of the lower die size of flash compared with SRAMs.

The two companies said the link meets the specifications for a VSR data transmission scheme proposed by Cisco Systems Inc. in the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF), which is has been adopted by networking industry participants including CIENA Corp. and Juniper Networks Inc.

Take the proposed purchase of Osram Sylvania's .64 GET terminal (connector) systems business. Osram Sylvania, the North American unit of Germany's Osram GmbH, was compelled to sell the .64 connector business last year after Tyco paid $1.1 billion for Siemens AG's electromechanical unit.
