Switched interconnect architectures like StarFabric/PCI Express AS were designed from the onset with HA in mind. While HA in general is a multi-layer issue, these interconnect technologies have a number of hardware-based HA features and additional primitives for the upper layers to use.

One of the key techniques used in this design flow is the modeling of the system at the transaction level. Transaction level modeling (TLM) is simply a higher abstraction level for modeling. Systems modeled in RTL are concerned about the hardware details such as pin-level behavior of their system. With TLM, it is possible to accurately model many aspects of a system at a higher (e.g. Read and Write) level. By using TLM we are simplifying the modeling effort and we also gain simulation speed.

End-to-end media transmission to a remote MTA (or the MG if the other end point is controlled by the PSTN) is secured by encrypting the RTP and RTCP packets content using a block cipher (AES).6 Optional authentication for RTP and RTCP packets can be achieved using hashing schemes (e.g. MMH, SHA).
