Hardware-based VPNs, using a standalone VPN appliance” or VPN features implemented in a switch, router or firewall, can certainly offer higher performance than software solutions. Performance in the range of 20 to 60 Mbits/s is reasonable, if encryption is handled using dedicated hardware, such as the 77xx-series encryption processors from Hi/fn (Los Gatos, Calif.). However, such hardware solutions aren't inherently scalable. In a large operation with bandwidth needs exceeding those one-box limits, the solution requires multiple VPN appliances. Each VPN appliance must have its own IP address, and clients are directed toward that particular IP address, eliminating or complicating the potential for automatic fail-over, load balancing or scalability.

This year will likely see a healthier flash market, after steep price competition and overcapacity drove the industry's first-ever decline in 1998, Niebel said. Total revenue for flash was $2.5 billion last year, which was about 8 percent below the 1997 total despite a nearly 30 percent increase in unit shipments. Niebel is forecasting a flash market of some $2.95 billion this year.

In terms of investments, we are working aggressively to try and put the capacity in place forthe growth we have seen and expect,” Kelly said. We are taking a multipronged approach: makinginvestments in logic ourselves, in the Burlington, Vt., fab. Our silicon-on-insulator technologyis ramping up there as we speak, as is our 0.18-micron CMOS capability. We are also activelyconverting memory to logic at IBM fabs in a number of locations, and will continue to do thatfairly aggressively. Memory for logic is a good trade-off.”
