Most of the time, you don't need to resort to actually coding in assembler as long as you have a reasonable idea what the compiler is going to do with your C code. If you can intelligently inspect the disassembly and tweak your C, so much the better. I know plenty of PC programmers who blithely use Microsoft's heavyweight .NET object library without the faintest idea about the resources those objects will demand.
